Holiday/winter break shutdown guide

Let's all do our part to reduce energy waste over the holidays! If your building, facility or office space will be closed for all or part of the holiday period, taking these simple steps will save both energy and utility costs. The basic principle is to turn off everything that doesn’t need to be on.

Facility managers:

  • Set building automation schedule to holiday settings.
  • Set back building temperature controls to unoccupied settings, which also includes workspace temperatures that are set in the immediate space.
  • Turn off as many exterior lights as permitted by administration.
  • Close drapes and/or blinds in common areas to reduce heat loss during the day.
  • Make sure all office lighting is turned OFF.
  • Ensure all doors and windows are closed.
  • Turn off all non-essential exhaust fans.
  • If you observe any HVAC system running during non-occupied times, report it immediately to management.

Campus faculty and staff:

  • Close drapes and blinds to reduce heat gain during the day. Curtains help keep the heat in your space!
  • Make sure all office lighting is turned off, including personal lamps, monitors and personal appliances like space heaters/coolers.
  • Please note that HVAC services may be suspended or limited during the holiday period.
